Libraries dialogue notes

WSU Libraries dialogue notes 3.18.19

Assumptions
  • Tech changes student learning
  • Open access very impactful if successful
  • Why libraries if Google
  • Complicated environment with 17k vendors, 14K platforms
  • Lots of consolidation but that doesn’t make it easier
  • Info seeking behavior has changed
  • People at all stages of the technology curve
  • Communication challenges – all online and independent
  • Expectation for immediacy
  • More intensity and speed
  • Different resources – depth is $$
  • They don’t come to us first – we have to go to where they are
  • More and more students are online
  • Insitution’s role evolves for libraries and it’s more diffused (e.g. BB, AMS)
  • Copyright – interlibrary loan affected, costly
  • Study spaces evolving to address different modes of scholarship
  • 5-6% increased cost of materials every year
Mission
  • Fine
  • Land grant is powerful—huge impact on state
  • Land grant comes naturally to libraries
  • Important to go beyond Extension for outreach; e.g. the music concert in Spokane
  • L G is “sacred” – why I am here
Values
  • Is who we hope to be
  • Can list 47 things – reasonable
  • “inclusion” rather than “diversity”
  • What does “global citizen” mean?
Drive to 25
  • Better resourced, e.g. libraries, collections and people, OERs, data preservation
  • Research having an impact
  • Students who excel
  • Gets you in doors you don’t get into otherwise
  • Have to double our budget
  • We do great work: Our library instruction is about the best but stretched so thin
  • Faculty repositories will be UP
  • Emphasis on digital
  • Uniformly high quality physical spaces
Short-term goals
  • Time to graduation, retention
  • 20% fewer staff now than when came; many on grants—improve this?
  • Budget up – grants don’t serve the core
  • Bigger and better library
  • Basic infrastructure – grants can’t support this
  • Reach the bottom of the top 25 in collections requires that we double our collections
  • No EBB $ comes to the libraries
  • Key is size, special collections for Top 25
  • U will demonstrate progress
    • Students
    • Faculty
    • $
  • Students without debt
  • Library is an inclusive place; an equalizer for student success
