Spine Header
This page covers a number of ways to customize the Spine theme header, and offers an overview of the behavior you should expect when using each one.

Site-wide controls
By default, the “Site Title” determines the text on the top and the “Tagline” determines the text on the bottom. Changing those – either under “Settings” > “General” or through the Customizer in the “Site Identity” section – is one way to change the header across an entire site.
The “Site Identity” Customizer section also has fields labeled “Global Header Top” and “Global Header Bottom” that, if filled, will override the Site Title and Tagline text respectively.
This is useful in cases where there are a number of sites that need to follow, for instance, a “College” > “Department” naming convention in the header. Changing the Site Title in such a case could lead to confusion on administration screens and menus where sites are listed by their titles.
Of further interest are the three checkboxes beneath the “Global Header” fields.
- “Show Main Header”, as advertised, toggles the visibility of the entire header.
- “Show Article Title” toggles the visibility of individual page and post titles, that are normally displayed below the site header.
- (Note that pages created using the Page Builder don’t display titles in this way to begin with, so they are not effected by the “Show Article Title” option.)
- “Use article title in main header” will display individual page or post titles in place of the bottom text of the site header. This option overrides both the site Tagline and the “Global Header Bottom” text.
These three options, too, apply across your entire site.
Individual page controls
The option to override the site heading text for any given individual page is also available. Beneath the text editor or page builder interface is the “Spine Main Header” block. It contains the “Top Header Text” and “Bottom Header Text” fields, along with some explanatory/instructional text. These fields will override their respective parts of the site header if text is entered into them.
If the “Use article title in main header” Customizer option is checked, “Bottom Header Text” will also take the place of the page title in the header.
Page hierarchy adds another possible behavior to the bottom part of the header. If no “Global Header Bottom” text is set (via the Customizer), the bottom header text on a child page will be the parent page’s title – even if the parent page has “Bottom Header Text” set.
HTML <title> tag
HTML titles for pages and posts are intended to display as:
'Page/Post Title' | 'Site Title' | Washington State University
Neither the “Global Header Top” customizer option nor individual page overrides have any effect on this.
Home page titles are meant to display as:
'Site Title' | Washington State University
